Preseason Tune Up

The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio is a measurement adopted by the Department of Energy that allows consumers to compare the relative efficiency of different brands and models of air conditioners. Replacing an older 10 SEER air conditioner installed in the mid-1990s with a new 14 SEER unit can save up to 30 percent on monthly energy costs.

Similarly, a furnace that operates at 60 percent efficiency exhausts 40 percent of the fuel it consumes as waste gas. A new furnace with a minimum Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating of 80 will use 20 percent less fuel than the older model while providing a similar BTU output.
